Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Begin the trek through pristine rainforest

+

Your 9-day Northern Circuit adventure begins at Londorossi Gate (2,250m) where you'll complete registration formalities. We then drive to the Lemosho starting point and begin our gentle trek through the lush, untouched rainforest.

The trail meanders through beautiful montane forest with opportunities to spot blue monkeys and various bird species. We'll ascend gradually to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m), enjoying the peaceful surroundings and preparing for the days ahead. The Northern Circuit starts with the same beautiful approach as Lemosho before branching off to the exclusive northern side.

We'll trek through stunning volcanic landscape with unique vegetation including giant lobelias and groundsels. As we approach Shira 1 Camp (3,500m), we're rewarded with our first panoramic views of Kibo Peak. The trail offers spectacular views of the Shira Needle and the dramatic northern ice fields. We'll ascend gradually to Moir Hut (4,200m), one of the most remote camps on the mountain. The extra day in the Northern Circuit itinerary allows us to explore this unique area without rushing.

Acclimatization Day at Moir Hut

Extra day for optimal altitude adaptation

+

This crucial acclimatization day is what makes the 9-day Northern Circuit so successful. We'll take a hike to higher elevation in the morning, following the "climb high, sleep low" principle that dramatically improves acclimatization.

The extra day at this critical altitude allows your body to fully adapt to the reduced oxygen levels. This significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness and maximizes your chances of summit success. We'll explore the surrounding area, enjoy the spectacular views, and prepare mentally and physically for the days ahead.

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

Traverse the remote northern slopes

+

Today we continue our traverse along Kilimanjaro's northern slopes, enjoying some of the most spectacular and least-crowded scenery on the mountain. The trail offers breathtaking views of the northern ice fields and the Kenyan plains far below.

We'll descend slightly to Buffalo Camp (4,020m), following the unique topography of the northern circuit. The camp offers incredible sunset views and a true wilderness experience. The gradual elevation profile of this day provides excellent active acclimatization.

Buffalo Camp to Rongai Third Cave

Continue the northern circuit traverse

+

We continue our journey along the northern circuit, traversing through increasingly alpine terrain with spectacular views in all directions. The remote nature of this route means we'll likely have the trail to ourselves.

Today's trek takes us to Rongai Third Cave (3,800m), where we begin to approach the more frequently traveled summit route. The gradual descent to this camp provides excellent acclimatization while giving our bodies a slight break before the final push to summit.

We continue our ascent to School Hut (4,750m), our base camp for the summit attempt. The trail takes us through alpine desert with increasingly sparse vegetation as we approach the final ascent route.

Thanks to our optimal acclimatization on the 9-day Northern Circuit, your body is now well-prepared for the high altitude. We'll arrive at School Hut for an early dinner and spend the evening resting and preparing for the midnight summit attempt. We'll hydrate well, check our equipment, and get as much rest as possible before the challenging night ahead.

Summit day - Reach the roof of Africa

+

We begin our summit attempt around midnight, trekking by headlamp through the darkness. The climb to Gilman's Point (5,685m) is challenging, but witnessing the sunrise from this vantage point is an unforgettable experience.

From Gilman's Point, we continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - the highest point in Africa. After celebrating our achievement and taking photos, we descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for the night. The optimal acclimatization of the 9-day route makes this challenging day much more manageable.

Final descent and celebration

+

After a well-deserved breakfast, we begin our final descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m). The trek down is much easier and faster than the ascent, giving us time to reflect on our incredible achievement.

At Mweka Gate, you'll receive your summit certificates - gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak and green for Gilman's Point. We'll then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, celebration dinner, and to collect your luggage before departure, celebrating your successful 9-day Northern Circuit adventure - conquering Kilimanjaro's longest route with optimal acclimatization.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kilimanjaro Climbing

Find answers to common questions about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via all routes and durations.

What is the best time of year to climb Kilimanjaro?

+

The best climbing seasons are January-March and June-October. January-March offers warmer temperatures with clearer skies, while June-October has drier conditions with excellent visibility. The Northern Circuit route is excellent year-round due to its favorable weather patterns on the northern slopes, but the dry seasons are still preferred.

What is the success rate for this route?

+

Success rates vary by route and duration. The 9-day Northern Circuit route has the highest success rate of all Kilimanjaro routes. Northern Circuit Route (9 days: 95%+, 8 days: 90-95%), Machame Route (7 days: 85-90%, 6 days: 75-85%), Lemosho Route (7 days: 85-90%, 8 days: 90-95%). The 9-day Northern Circuit is recommended for those prioritizing summit success and optimal acclimatization.

How difficult is this route and what fitness level is required?

+

The 9-day Northern Circuit Route is considered moderate in difficulty due to its gradual ascent profile and excellent acclimatization. While it's the longest route, the daily hiking distances are reasonable and the gradual elevation gain makes it suitable for most physically fit individuals. Good cardiovascular fitness and mental endurance are required, but previous high-altitude experience is not as critical as with more direct routes.

What are the symptoms of altitude sickness and how is it managed?

+

Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and carry pulse oximeters to monitor oxygen saturation. We follow the "pole pole" (slowly slowly) approach, maintain proper hydration, and have emergency oxygen and descent protocols. The 9-day Northern Circuit's gradual ascent and extra acclimatization days significantly reduce altitude risks.

What type of accommodation is provided during the climb?

+

The Northern Circuit Route uses high-quality mountain tents for accommodation. Our camping equipment includes comfortable sleeping mats, and we provide spacious dining tents with camp chairs and tables. All accommodations are selected for safety, comfort, and minimal environmental impact. The Northern Circuit offers some of the most remote and spectacular campsites on Kilimanjaro's northern slopes.

What should I pack for my Kilimanjaro climb?

+

Essential items include: layered clothing for varying temperatures, quality waterproof jacket and pants, insulated jacket for summit night, thermal base layers, broken-in hiking boots, headlamp, sleeping bag rated to -10°C, daypack, and personal medications. We provide a comprehensive packing list upon booking and offer rental equipment for most items.

How many people are in a typical climbing group?

+

We maintain small group sizes of 4-8 climbers on the Northern Circuit route with a guide-to-client ratio of 1:2 on summit night and 1:3 during regular trekking days. This ensures personalized attention and safety. Private climbs can be arranged for individuals, couples, or custom groups with tailored pacing and flexibility.

What meals are provided during the trek?

+

Our professional mountain chefs prepare nutritious, high-energy meals including breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus snacks. Meals are designed for altitude trekking with carbohydrates for energy and adequate hydration. We accommodate dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.) with advance notice. Sample meals include porridge, soups, pasta, fresh vegetables, and protein sources.

What is the recommended tipping amount for the crew?

+

Tipping is customary and greatly appreciated. We recommend $400-500 per climber for the 9-day trek distributed as follows: Head Guide ($20-25/day), Assistant Guide ($15-20/day), Cook ($12-15/day), and Porters ($8-10/day each). Tips are typically collected and distributed collectively on the last day. Our staff work exceptionally hard to ensure your safety and success.

What safety measures are in place during the climb?

+

Our comprehensive safety protocol includes: certified Wilderness First Responder guides, daily health checks with pulse oximeters, emergency oxygen systems, satellite communication, carefully planned acclimatization schedules, and emergency evacuation procedures. We maintain one of the industry's best safety records through rigorous guide training and conservative altitude management.

Can I climb Kilimanjaro if I have no previous high-altitude experience?

+

The Northern Circuit route is EXCELLENT for first-time high-altitude climbers due to its gradual ascent profile and excellent acclimatization. The 9-day duration provides the optimal schedule for altitude adaptation, making it the best choice for those new to high-altitude trekking. Good physical fitness is still required, but the route is designed to maximize success for properly prepared individuals.

What makes this route different from other Kilimanjaro routes?

+

The 9-day Northern Circuit Route is Kilimanjaro's longest route with the highest success rate. It offers exclusive access to the remote northern slopes, spectacular scenery of the northern ice fields, and optimal acclimatization through gradual ascent. It combines the scenic beauty of Lemosho with the wilderness experience of the northern circuit, providing the most comprehensive Kilimanjaro experience available.
