Day
1

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Begin Kilimanjaro ascent through lush rainforest

+

Your 19-day adventure begins at Machame Gate (1,800m) where you'll complete registration formalities. We start our ascent through the beautiful, dense rainforest on the southwestern side of Kilimanjaro.

The trail climbs steadily through lush montane forest with opportunities to spot blue monkeys and various bird species. We'll ascend to Machame Camp (3,000m), our first campsite on this scenic route. The Machame Route is known for its beautiful landscapes and excellent acclimatization profile.

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Ascend through heather and moorland zones

+

After breakfast, we continue our ascent, leaving the rainforest behind and entering the heather and moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically as we gain altitude, with spectacular views emerging.

We'll trek through beautiful volcanic landscape with unique vegetation including giant groundsels and lobelias. As we approach Shira Camp (3,840m), we're rewarded with our first panoramic views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo Peak. The Machame Route offers some of the most scenic campsites on the mountain.

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

Acclimatization day via Lava Tower

+

Today we practice the essential "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization technique. We ascend to Lava Tower (4,600m) for lunch, giving our bodies exposure to higher altitude, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,900m).

This strategic acclimatization day significantly increases your chances of summit success. The descent into the beautiful Barranco Valley offers spectacular views of the famous Barranco Wall, which we'll climb tomorrow. The varied scenery makes this one of the most rewarding days on the mountain.

+

Today features the exciting scramble up the Barranco Wall - a non-technical but impressive rock face that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. This is one of the most enjoyable sections of the climb.

After conquering the wall, we traverse through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp (3,995m). The camp sits in a beautiful valley with excellent views of the southern glaciers. Today's shorter trek allows for additional rest and acclimatization before our summit push.

Approach the base camp for summit attempt

+

We continue our ascent to Barafu Camp (4,673m), which means "ice" in Swahili. The trail takes us through alpine desert with increasingly sparse vegetation as we approach the base of the summit cone.

Thanks to our optimal acclimatization on the 7-day Machame route, your body is now well-prepared for the high altitude. We'll arrive at Barafu Camp for lunch and spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the midnight summit attempt. We'll hydrate well, check our equipment, and get as much rest as possible before the challenging night ahead.

Summit day - Reach the roof of Africa

+

We begin our summit attempt around midnight, trekking by headlamp through the darkness. The climb to Stella Point (5,739m) is challenging, but witnessing the sunrise from this vantage point is an unforgettable experience.

From Stella Point, we continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - the highest point in Africa. After celebrating our achievement and taking photos, we descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for the night. The optimal acclimatization of the 7-day route makes this challenging day much more manageable.

At Mweka Gate, you'll receive your summit certificates - gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak and green for Stella Point. We'll then transfer you back to Arusha where you'll check into your lodge for a hot shower, celebration dinner, and a good night's rest before beginning your safari adventure the next day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ultimate Tanzania Combo

Find answers to common questions about our comprehensive Kilimanjaro, safari and Zanzibar package.

What makes this 19-day package the ultimate Tanzania experience?

+

This 19-day package is considered the ultimate Tanzania experience because it combines all three of Tanzania's major attractions: Conquering Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa's highest peak), exploring the world-famous northern circuit safari parks (including Serengeti and Ngorongoro), and relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Zanzibar. It offers the perfect balance of adventure, wildlife, and relaxation, allowing you to experience Tanzania's diverse landscapes and cultures comprehensively. Few packages offer this complete experience in one well-planned itinerary.

How physically demanding is this complete package?

+

The package is designed with built-in recovery time. The Kilimanjaro climb (Days 1-7) is physically demanding and requires good fitness. However, the safari portion (Days 9-14) is much less physically demanding, mostly involving game drives. The Zanzibar beach holiday (Days 15-19) provides complete relaxation and recovery. The rest day in Arusha (Day 8) between Kilimanjaro and safari allows for physical recovery. While the Kilimanjaro portion is challenging, the overall package is manageable for most physically active individuals.

What type of accommodation can we expect throughout the trip?

+

Accommodation varies throughout the package: On Kilimanjaro, you'll stay in quality mountain tents at designated campsites. During the safari, accommodation includes comfortable tented camps and lodges in the national parks. In Arusha, you'll stay in a comfortable lodge. In Zanzibar, you'll experience a Stone Town heritage hotel and a beautiful beach resort. We select accommodations that provide comfort while maintaining the authentic experience of each location.

Can we customize different components of this package?

+

Yes, this package can be customized in several ways: You can choose different Kilimanjaro routes (Lemosho instead of Machame), extend or shorten the safari portion, select different Zanzibar beach areas (north, east, or south coast), upgrade accommodation levels, or add additional activities. The package is designed to be flexible to accommodate different preferences, fitness levels, and budgets. Please discuss your customization preferences when booking.

What is the best time of year for this comprehensive package?

+

The best time for this package is during Tanzania's dry seasons: January-March and June-October. January-March offers warmer climbing conditions and excellent wildlife viewing with newborn animals. June-October has the best wildlife viewing with animals congregating around water sources, and the Great Migration river crossings typically occur July-August. Zanzibar is beautiful year-round, though the best beach weather is during the dry seasons. We can advise on the optimal timing based on your specific interests.

How does the domestic flight to Zanzibar work?

+

The domestic flight from Arusha to Zanzibar is included in the package. After completing your safari, you'll be transferred to Arusha Airport for a scheduled flight to Zanzibar (approximately 1.5 hours). Upon arrival in Zanzibar, you'll be met by our representative and transferred to your accommodation. The flight is typically included with a checked baggage allowance, though we recommend confirming specific baggage limits when booking. This convenient flight saves you a long drive and allows more time to enjoy Zanzibar.

What happens if I cannot complete the Kilimanjaro climb?

+

If you cannot complete the Kilimanjaro climb due to altitude sickness or other reasons, our guides will ensure your safe descent. You'll still participate in the safari and Zanzibar portions as planned. We recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers trekking interruptions. While we make every effort to help clients summit safely, individual responses to altitude vary, and safety is always our priority. The safari and Zanzibar portions are not physically demanding and can be enjoyed regardless of your Kilimanjaro summit success.

Is this package suitable for families or older travelers?

+

The Kilimanjaro portion has a minimum age of 10 years and requires good physical fitness, making it challenging for very young children or those with mobility issues. However, the safari and Zanzibar portions are excellent for all ages. For families with younger children or travelers preferring less physical activity, we can customize the package to focus more on safari and beach, with alternative activities instead of the full Kilimanjaro climb. We can create family-friendly versions of this package upon request.
