Begin your northern approach through wilderness
Your Rongai route adventure begins at Rongai Gate (1,950m) on the northern side of Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border. After completing registration formalities and meeting your guides and porters, we start our trek through the beautiful pine forest and cultivated farmland.
The trail gradually ascends through the forest zone with opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy the unique northern perspective of the mountain. We'll reach Simba Camp (2,600m) in the afternoon, situated at the edge of the moorland zone with stunning views of the plains below.
Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 2,600m
Accommodation: Mountain Camping
Ascend through moorland to higher altitude
After breakfast, we continue our ascent through the moorland zone, leaving the forest behind. The trail offers increasingly spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding wilderness as we gain altitude.
We'll trek through beautiful heather and moorland landscapes with occasional sightings of wildlife. The gradual ascent allows for excellent acclimatization as we approach Kikelewa Camp (3,600m). The camp offers breathtaking panoramic views of the northern slopes and the Kenyan plains in the distance.
Trekking Time: 6-7 hours
Elevation: 3,600m
Accommodation: Kikelewa Camp
Approach the spectacular Mawenzi Peak
Today we continue our ascent to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m), situated at the base of the spectacular Mawenzi Peak - Kilimanjaro's second highest summit. The trail becomes steeper as we approach this high-altitude camp.
The camp sits beside a beautiful alpine tarn (lake) with dramatic views of Mawenzi's rugged peaks. This is an important acclimatization day, and we'll take a short hike in the afternoon to higher elevation before returning to camp, following the "climb high, sleep low" principle.
Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 4,330m
Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Cross the saddle to Kibo base camp
Today we cross the spectacular "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This high-altitude desert landscape offers breathtaking views of both peaks and the surrounding terrain.
The relatively flat traverse across the saddle allows for excellent acclimatization as we approach Kibo Hut (4,700m), our base camp for the summit attempt. We'll arrive at Kibo Hut for lunch and spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the midnight summit push. This is a crucial day for hydration and mental preparation.
Trekking Time: 5-6 hours
Elevation: 4,700m
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Summit day - Reach the roof of Africa
We begin our summit attempt around midnight, trekking by headlamp through the darkness. The climb to Gilman's Point (5,681m) is steep and challenging, but witnessing the sunrise from the crater rim is an unforgettable experience.
From Gilman's Point, we continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - the highest point in Africa. After celebrating our achievement and taking photos, we descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for a well-deserved night's sleep.
Summit Trek: 6-8 hours
Descent: 4-5 hours
Maximum Altitude: 5,895m
Final descent and celebration
After a well-deserved breakfast, we begin our final descent through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,860m). The Rongai route descends via the Marangu route, offering a different perspective of the mountain.
At Marangu Gate, you'll receive your summit certificates - gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak and green for Gilman's Point. We'll then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, celebration dinner, and to collect your luggage before departure, celebrating your successful 6-day Rongai route adventure.
Descent Time: 5-6 hours
Elevation: 1,860m

Find answers to common questions about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via all routes and durations.
The best climbing seasons are January-March and June-October. January-March offers warmer temperatures with clearer skies, while June-October has drier conditions with excellent visibility. The Rongai route is particularly good during the rainy seasons as it receives less rainfall than southern routes.
Success rates vary by route and duration. Generally, longer routes have higher success rates due to better acclimatization. Rongai Route (6 days: 70-80%, 7 days: 80-85%), Machame Route (6 days: 75-85%, 7 days: 85-90%), Lemosho Route (7 days: 85-90%, 8 days: 90-95%). The 6-day Rongai offers good success rates with its gradual ascent profile.
The Rongai Route is considered one of the easier routes on Kilimanjaro with a gentle, steady ascent profile. While no mountaineering experience is required, good physical fitness is essential. You should be comfortable hiking 5-7 hours daily with a daypack. The route's wilderness nature and drier conditions make it ideal for those seeking a more remote experience.
Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and carry pulse oximeters to monitor oxygen saturation. We follow the "pole pole" (slowly slowly) approach, maintain proper hydration, and have emergency oxygen and descent protocols. The Rongai route's gradual ascent helps with acclimatization.
The Rongai Route uses high-quality mountain tents for accommodation. Our camping equipment includes comfortable sleeping mats, and we provide spacious dining tents with camp chairs and tables. All accommodations are selected for safety, comfort, and minimal environmental impact. The remote campsites on Rongai offer a true wilderness experience with excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
Essential items include: layered clothing for varying temperatures, quality waterproof jacket and pants, insulated jacket for summit night, thermal base layers, broken-in hiking boots, headlamp, sleeping bag rated to -10°C, daypack, and personal medications. We provide a comprehensive packing list upon booking and offer rental equipment for most items.
We maintain small group sizes of 4-10 climbers with a guide-to-client ratio of 1:2 on summit night and 1:4 during regular trekking days. This ensures personalized attention and safety. Private climbs can be arranged for individuals, couples, or custom groups with tailored pacing and flexibility.
Our professional mountain chefs prepare nutritious, high-energy meals including breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus snacks. Meals are designed for altitude trekking with carbohydrates for energy and adequate hydration. We accommodate dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.) with advance notice. Sample meals include porridge, soups, pasta, fresh vegetables, and protein sources.
Tipping is customary and greatly appreciated. We recommend $250-350 per climber for the 6-day trek distributed as follows: Head Guide ($20-25/day), Assistant Guide ($15-20/day), Cook ($12-15/day), and Porters ($8-10/day each). Tips are typically collected and distributed collectively on the last day. Our staff work exceptionally hard to ensure your safety and success.
Our comprehensive safety protocol includes: certified Wilderness First Responder guides, daily health checks with pulse oximeters, emergency oxygen systems, satellite communication, carefully planned acclimatization schedules, and emergency evacuation procedures. We maintain one of the industry's best safety records through rigorous guide training and conservative altitude management.
